Well, nothing beats the importance of styling the hair. Hair is the personal, precious jewel of every individual that says a lot about you.
It is literally a decorative feature of our bodies that instantly increase our value.
The diverse nature, color, and texture of hair depict how beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. That is why people pay special attention to the health of their hair which is absolutely justified.
The soft and flexible quality of hair makes it very easy and possible to make hair styling an art but choosing your cleaning and styling products is as crucially important as washing your hair.
Hair styling is an art many people practice these days, not just for fun, but as their source of income, too.
It equally corresponds to styling the clothes and makeup of the client, as hair makes a long lasting statement.
Due to increasing business consisting of hair styling, the products utilization has also increased along with their production.
New companies are emerging in the market to meet the demands of the public for a specific type of styles needed to maintain the oomph.
But some goodies are always in use because of their function, pomade is one of them. There are hundreds of companies. Check out our guide to best pomade for a better understanding.
What is pomade:
It is a styling product, usually as an oil or ointment to style the hair. It is desired for its strong hold and shinier appearance it leaves.
Is pomade harmful to the hair?
As surprising as it may sound, pomade is NOT harmful to the hair. Pomade is of two types, oil and water based.
The myth that originated about pomade and is still in existence is that it is bad for the hair and causes hair loss has no evidence of authenticity. Although you can apply few common hair loss treatments.
No research has been done to prove this; it is merely a creation by people spread by word of mouth.
What actually happens:
Is that human body needs time to adjust to the changing environment. When a new product is applied to any part of the body, let’s take it as pomade applied to hair for the first time, the hair and scalp take their time to adjust to the addition of something else.
The scalp may become greasier than before, the hair may easily become oily even of people who overall have normal/dry skin.
This outbreak of oil occurs in the period when the body is adapting to the chemicals of the applied pomade. Some barbers also claim that pomade dries out the scalp causing dandruff, itching and eventually, hair fall. But again, these are all just ‘talks’ or ‘rumors’ without any scientific back-up. The problem subsides faster than its occurrence.
So all it takes to try out new styling products is patience!
Secondly, every human body reacts differently to the same substance. Some people love to eat peanuts and others are allergic to it.
The similar phenomena can happen to anyone and it may seem their hair is falling off. The hair fall may be an allergic reaction to the pomade used, the reaction caused by a specific chemical or as a whole.
Is water based pomade better?
Water-based pomade and oil-based pomade differs only in the consistency. Their differences are:
-> The oil based pomades contain petroleum and give greasy\wet look with a strong hold. Whereas, water based pomades contain water and usually have a matte finish.
-> Secondly, the only disadvantage of oil based pomade is that it is harder to wash out. It stays longer even after one wash. But water based is easier to wash and get rid of.
-> The only drawback of water based pomade is that due to the presence of more chemicals in it, it is a bit on the pricey side, and oil based is cheaper and ancient.
-> Lastly, some people complain about acne outbreak on the forehead after using oil based pomade because it clogs their pores according to them.
How to wash-out pomade:
Washing out pomade can be a little hectic for lazy people like me, but not impossible. It may demand extra products and 10 minutes more than usual routine to wash out, but it does it in one stroke with all the pomade down the drain. For oil based pomade, here is the method:
Olive oil and dish washing liquid:
Gently apply and massage olive oil onto the hair and scalp before the shower, this step with olive oil breaks down the tough barrier of pomade. During the shower, wet all your hair and apply dish washing soap such as Ajax or dawn thoroughly. This product cuts out all the grease and makes it easier to be washed by water, as petroleum is a water-repellent and can’t be cut down by simple aqua. Olive oil is inexpensive and returns nourishment to the hair.
Use water based pomade:
If you’re tight on time and cannot go through this extent of dedication to wash out oil based pomade, switch to water based as they easily dissolve in the first wash.
Extra tips to use pomade:
It depends on your preferences and choices you make. The conventional method is to take the dime sized product on the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and then stroke your fingers in the hair from the root to the tip. This application can then be followed by brushing your hair to get the desired sleek and neat look, or you can leave it for a messy look. Few extra tips are:
-> Always ask yourself, shine or no shine? If you want the shine and highlight reflecting in people’s eyes, apply pomade to slightly damp\wet hair, or use pomade that is designed to give a shiny, sleek look.
-> For a matte finish, dry your hair before applying the pomade or simply use matte pomade.
-> The second choice to make would be how strong the hold should be of the pomade you use? Are you up for a messier look, then 1-2 holding the strength of any pomade would do. But if you want to rely on one wash for at least 2 days with better hold, for example, for traveling, use pomade with a greater holding power to control the hair at your tips.
It would be safe to say that keep using pomade; either water or oil based and keep rocking new hairstyles every day. They are too good to be harmful.
